The machine can roll up to a W44-in. by 262-lb. beam the hard way (X-X axis) and any beam the easy way (Y-Y axis). It can roll an HEB 1000 beam, equivalent to a W40-in. by 211-lb. beam, to a radius less than 100 ft. with almost no distortion. The 235,000-lb. machine also can roll 26-in.-OD pipe with 2-in. wall thickness and almost any square or rectangular tube.

A new Grove TM500E-2 truck crane was the perfect solution to help with an upgrade at the Swatara Township water treatment facility in Hummelstown, Pa., U.S. Owned and operated by Greiner Industries Inc., an industrial contractor and crane rental company in Mount Joy Pa., U.S., the crane was needed to lift a decommissioned pump and some old piping from where it was installed 25 ft below the ground.

According to John Dohner, project manager for Greiner Industries’ crane division, reach was more critical than capacity on this job.“The heaviest load we lifted was the pump, which weighed about 3,000 lbs,” he said. “Overhead obstacles and confined space meant we had to position the crane 75 ft from the point of lift. But this was no problem for the crane which has a 102 ft boom. Exceptional reach was the primary reason we chose the TM500E-2 for this job.” The Grove TM500E-2 has two engines – a 300 hp on-highway engine that powers the carrier and a 110 hp off-highway engine that powers the crane functions. Having two engines means that users do not have to run the larger carrier engine to power the crane. This reduces fuel usage, decreases emissions and limits the hours on the carrier engine.

The idea of ordering a 40-foot-long press brake was no problem for Greiner Industries, Mount Joy, Pa. The real work started when the brake was ready for delivery. The company had to find a way to get the mammoth machine to its shop.

The machine, a 2,750-ton Baykal press brake, ordered through Fab-Line Machinery, St. Charles, Ill., had to be transported to the facility in four pieces: two side frames that weighed 88,000 pounds each, as well as a ram and a bed that each weighed 190,000 lbs. Transportation required a truck with 16 axles under each trailer. Each axle had four tires, so the trailer had 64 tires total.

Greiner specializes in structural steel and heavy plate fabrication. It does work for power plants and the mining industry. In the 33 years the company has been in business, it has done structural steel jobs in an industry where the work always seems to be getting larger and heavier. This installation had to set a new standard, however. The assembled press brake weighs more than 800,000 lbs.
